In the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, Russian forces, as announced by President Vladimir Putin, have made substantial territorial gains, including the strategic city of Avdiivka, which has been a symbol of Ukrainian resistance since 2014.
Avdiivka, located just 15 kilometers from the Moscow-held Donetsk, has been a focal point of intense fighting, with Kyiv reporting recent “heated” combat as Russian forces attempt to surround the city. While Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has stated that Kyiv is holding its ground in Avdiivka, Moscow claims its positions have improved.
The conflict in this area has major humanitarian implications, with a reduced population of approximately 1,600 civilians in the city, significantly lower than its pre-war population of 31,000. This escalation comes after four months of a Ukrainian counter-offensive, which has been slower than expected, leading Putin to assert that it “totally failed.”
Russian attacks in other regions have resulted in casualties, further exacerbating the humanitarian impact of the conflict. The situation in Ukraine remains fluid and a matter of grave international concern.
