Alexei Navalny was President Vladimir Putin’s strongest domestic opponent. Navalny was walking at the “Polar Wolf” Arctic penal colony when he fell unconscious and died. Navalny was serving a three-decade sentence at the penal colony.

Navalny was a former lawyer and the head of the disparate Russian opposition to Putin. He was the last hope for a change in power since Putin is gearing up for the next elections. With Putin’s win secure, the former KGB spy will serve in office until 2030.

U.S. President Joe Biden joined other Western leaders in criticizing Russia and Putin. They are blaming Putin and his followers for having a hand in Navalny’s death.

Navalny gained fame a decade ago by speaking out against the rampant corruption ravaging the country. He also documented how Russian leaders indulged in opulent activities while the country was suffering.

No other Russian opposition leader can match up to Navalny. The urban youth of Russia considered Navalny to be a beacon of light in Putin’s administration. Putin has been the longest-serving Russian ruler since Josef Stalin.

The District Penitentiary Service commented that Navalny felt unwell while walking. He was at the IK-3 penal colony in Kharp, approximately 1,900 kilometers (1,200 miles) northeast of the capital.

Resuscitation attempts were futile, as he fell unconscious and died shortly after. Kira Yarmysh, spokesperson for Navalny, states that there was almost no hope that he was alive.

Yulia, the wife of Navalny, is his surviving kin. In a statement to the Munich Security Conference, Yulia claims that she is not sure if her husband is truly dead. She continues that the Russian government can be unreliable while spreading such news.

Yulia also states that if her husband is truly dead, then the entire Russian government and administration will be held responsible for his death and what they have done to the country and its people.

The Kremlin states that Putin was informed of Navalny’s death while visiting factory workers in Chelyabinsk. Putin has made no public comments on the matter. Western leaders paid tribute to Navalny’s bravery and courage. However, a few have cited without evidence that Russia was directly involved in his death. They also stated that the responsibility for these actions falls onto Putin.
