Russia has decided to invite the Taliban to the St. Petersburg Economic Forum, which is one of its biggest annual economic forums, as Moscow plans to remove the ban on the Islamist group, confirmed by a top Russian diplomat. After the withdrawal of US troops in the year 2021, after 20 years, the ties between Russia and the Taliban have grown nothing but stronger.
According to the Russian News Agency TASS, Zamir Kabulov, the director of the Second Asia department, told the news agency, “Russian foreign and justice agencies advised Putin on considering removing the ban on the Taliban,” while the Afghan leaders stated that they were interested in the purchase of Russian oil products.
St. Petersburg’s annual economic forum was once hosted by the CEOs and investment bankers from London and New York. Now, this has significantly changed after the Ukraine war, due to which Russia’s relations with the West have hit rock bottom and triggered the biggest crisis in its relations since the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis.
The St. Petersburg Economic Forum is now mainly dominated by businessmen from India, China, and the Middle East.
