Russian forces have attempted to start an armored ground invasion; the Ukrainian defense ministry has claimed that Russia launched an armored ground invasion around 5 am on May 10, 2023, near the town of Vovchansk. The attack had been repulsed by the Ukrainian defense forces, but skirmishes with varied intensity have been taking place at the border.

A Ukrainian military source told the Reuters News agency that the Russian Military had pushed one kilometer (0.6 miles) into the border region. They aimed, he said, to advance 10 km inside to create a buffer zone that President Vladimir Putin had promised to create as a means to stop Ukrainian counterattacks on the Russian border region.

Ukraine had previously stated that it was aware that Russia was assembling along its northeastern border. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that his troops were prepared for a ground assault.

He stated, “I thank each soldier, sergeant, and officer who is defending our positions. We are strengthening Kharkiv in all directions. Along the state border and front lines, we will continue to destroy our occupiers and thwart Russia’s offensive intentions.”

As of now, Ukraine has sent reinforcements to the area. According to Kharkiv’s governor Oleh Syniehubov, the authorities were evacuating about 3,000 civilians from Vovchansk, fewer than 5 kilometers from the border, the region that had come under heavy shelling. It could also lead to an opening of a new front; the Ukrainian forces had driven Russian troops out of the Kharkiv region in the first year of 2022, but Russia has revamped its operations as Ukraine remains outgunned and outmanned.
