Palakkad, Kerala– In a significant move, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) has expressed support for a caste census, but with a crucial caveat—it should not be used for political or electoral purposes.

Speaking at a press conference, RSS publicity in-charge Sunil Ambekar said, “A caste census can be useful for welfare activities targeting communities that are lagging behind. However, it should not be used as a political tool for elections.”

The statement assumes significance as the BJP-led NDA government faces demands for a caste census from opposition parties and its own allies. The JD(U)-led government in Bihar conducted a caste survey last year, and the Supreme Court recently ruled that states have the power to sub-classify SC/STs for reservation purposes.

Ambekar emphasized that the RSS works for Hindu unity and national integrity, and any decision on sub-classification should be taken with the consensus of the concerned communities. He also announced that the RSS will renew its focus on its social harmony campaign to thwart “any designs to divide society.”

The statement is seen as a middle ground for the Modi government to appease diverse communities within the Hindu fold amidst opposition allegations that it could alter the Constitution and reservations. The RSS has stressed that any sub-classification of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes should be done with the consensus of the concerned communities. This move is seen as an attempt to address the concerns of various communities within the Hindu fold.
