An 80-year-old woman was strangled to death in her house after burglars burglarised her home in Jaitpur. Two suspects in the case have been nabbed by the police, one of whom is identified as an ex-tenant at the victim’s residence, and the other as a juvenile.
Police received information about the incident on Tuesday at 8:45 am when a team from the nearby police station responded to the call made by the victim’s son, Surender Kumar Sharma, from Saurav Vihar in Jaitpur. The victim’s son, a businessman named Surender Kumar Sharma, informed the police of the incident. He lived in the same locality with his family, while his mother lived alone.
“Surender visited his mother every day to give her meals and tea,” said a police officer. “Today too, he came to her residence at 8:30 am, and when nobody responded to the knocks, he peeped through the window and saw her prone on the bed,” added the officer.
The rear window latch was open through which Surender entered the house. He sensed the signs that his mother (Shakuntala) was strangled to death. Shakuntala’s golden ring and bangles were missing. Rajesh Deo, DCP (South-East), said a case has been registered, and several teams are investigating the murder.
Policemen investigating the crime scene observed two people acting suspiciously in the early hours of Tuesday. “We identified one of the suspects and arrested him,” said a senior cop. On intensive questioning, the suspect, Mayank, admitted to the crime. Based on his information, a minor 16-year-old male accomplice was also arrested, while stolen items, including three golden rings, a nose pin, five bangles, and a pair of golden earrings, have been recovered.
Mayank had studied up till Class 10 and was unemployed. Mayank’s father works for an NGO in Noida. “The accused had lived in the victim’s residence as a tenant for three months before moving to another house in the locality,” the officer said. “He knew that the woman lived alone and had money, and that’s why he decided to rob her.”
Mayank persuaded his juvenile accomplice, telling him that a significant sum awaits them. “The tenant was familiar with the house and knew he could enter through the gate, whose net meshing was torn. During the robbery, as per Mayank, the woman woke up, and to silence her, the two strangled her to death,” the police revealed.
