Rishi Sunak concedes defeat after polls show that UK’s center-left Labor Party is expected to acquire a staggering majority in the parliamentary election, ending 14 years of the often tumultuous Conservative government. Keir Starmer will be Britain’s next Prime Minister, gaining a resounding victory over Sunak’s party.

The center-left party has already won 326 of the 650 seats in the Parliament, with exit polls suggesting that the numbers would rise to 410. Meanwhile, the Conservatives have only acquired 70 seats and are predicted to suffer perhaps the worst performance in the party’s history, as voters are swayed away from them due to a series of scandals, failing public services, and the cost of living. Although more results are yet to be announced from Thursday’s vote, this was a humiliating front for the Conservatives.

Despite Starmer’s victory, polls show that there is little enthusiasm for him or his party amongst voters. However, Starmer seems enthusiastic about reversing the impact that the Conservative government had on Britain, such as the Conservatives’ controversial policy of sending asylum seekers to Rwanda. “Tonight, people here and around the country have spoken and they’re ready for change, to end the politics of performance, a return to politics as public service,” he said, after winning his seat in London. “The change begins right here … You have voted. It is now time for us to deliver.” He also comes to power at a time when the country finds itself amidst a variety of daunting challenges, with Britain’s tax burden set to hit its highest after World War 2 and a net debt almost equivalent to annual economic output.

Moreover, living standards have drastically fallen and public services are struggling to survive, especially the National Health Service which has been dodged by strikes. Starmer also had to scale back on certain ambitious plans, such as its flagship green spending pledges, while he has promised not to raise taxes for working people.

Following the defeat of the Conservative Party, conversation regarding the next steps took immediate precedence. Some claim that its failure stemmed from abandoning the center ground, while others argue that Reform had won over voters who felt that the party had abandoned its roots. Nonetheless, one of the major factors that led to heavy damage for Conservative support was heavy campaigning against immigration carried out by the right-wing Reform UK party, headed by Brexit campaigner Nigel Farage.

As far-right parties have begun surging all across Europe, the call for populist alternatives has escalated. Starmer has also promised to improve relations with the European Union to resolve the issues created by Brexit. However, despite opposing Brexit, a move to rejoin the Union is not on the table. Although there are chances that Starmer may have to work with Donald Trump if he wins the upcoming November elections, Starmer has vowed to continue London’s unequivocal support for Ukraine.

The losses incurred by the Conservative Party stand as a stark reminder of the various scandals it had found itself in over its tenure that eventually led to its demise. “We deserved to lose. The Conservative Party just appears exhausted and out of ideas,” said Ed Costello, the chairman of the Grassroots Conservatives Organisation. He also adds that the fault lies not only with Rishi Sunak, but also ex-Prime Ministers Boris Johnson and Liz Truss.
