Rishi Sunak Faces No-Confidence Letter Following Suella Braverman’s Sacking

Rishi Sunak, the UK Prime Minister, is grappling with his first vote of no confidence after the dismissal of interior minister Suella Braverman. Conservative MP Andrea Jenkyns penned a scathing letter to 1922 Committee chairman Sir Graham Brady, condemning Sunak for ousting “democratically elected leader Boris Johnson” and purging the center-right from the cabinet.
Jenkyns asserted that Sunak’s actions, including forcing out Boris Johnson, were “unforgivable” and criticized the removal of Suella Braverman, the only cabinet member she believed spoke truthfully about issues such as the state of the streets and a perceived two-tier policing system. The MP expressed her agreement with public and party rejection of Sunak’s leadership, declaring, “It is time for Rishi Sunak to go.”
To initiate a vote of no confidence in Sunak’s leadership of the Conservative Party, 15 percent of MPs need to submit letters signaling their desire for a change of leader. Jenkyns’ letter adds to the political challenges Sunak faces amid internal party discontent.
The recent ministerial reshuffle by Sunak, which included bringing back former UK PM David Cameron as foreign minister, triggered the vote of no confidence. The reshuffle was prompted by the sacking of Suella Braverman, who had criticized the police in an unauthorized article for alleged “double standards” at protests, suggesting bias against right-wing demonstrators compared to pro-Palestinian marchers.
The shake-up also witnessed the resignation of UK Environment Secretary Therese Coffey, with Steve Barclay taking her place. Victoria Atkins assumed Barclay’s former role in the Department of Health, and Richard Holden replaced Greg Hands as the party chairman. Sunak now faces the challenge of maintaining party unity and navigating through internal dissent.
