S Jaishankar, India’s foreign minister, emphasized the need for India to redefine its role in international relations, urging a departure from Western-dominated intellectual frameworks that have shaped the world’s lexicon.

Speaking at an international relations conference in Pune, Jaishankar highlighted how Western terminologies like ‘Pyrrhic victory’, ‘Gordian knots’, and ‘trojan horse’ have permeated everyday language, underscoring the dominance of British intellectual concepts. He pointed out the lack of recognition for India’s rich history, contrasting it with the acknowledgment of China’s 5000-year legacy, citing Churchill’s belittling remarks about India.

Jaishankar stressed the importance of India’s unique history and the need to view it with fresh perspectives and open minds. He urged a reevaluation of India’s past, recognizing its complexity and nuance, calling for a more comprehensive understanding beyond politics.

The foreign minister emphasized that India’s cultural foundations must be strengthened to propel its global narrative. He highlighted the significance of India developing its own narrative, essential for representing the Global South, rebalancing global dynamics, and shaping a different world over the next five decades.

Jaishankar underlined the necessity of addressing not only economic and political aspects but also cultural history, traditions, political science, and international relations to ensure India’s comprehensive growth and relevance in a rapidly changing world. His words echoed the call for India to carve its distinct identity and narrative on the global stage.
