On Monday, in an unprecedented move, a total of 78 opposition MPs (33 from Lok Sabha and 45 from Rajya Sabha) were suspended from the ongoing winter session of Parliament. The trend continued on Tuesday as well, with 49 more Lok Sabha MPs suspended from the house on grounds of unruly behavior. The suspended leaders include Congress’ Shashi Tharoor and Manish Tewari, NCP’s Supriya Sule, and SP’s Dimple Yadav. With this, the total number of MPs suspended during this winter session has reached a record 141. The members were engaged in protests demanding that Union Home Minister Amit Shah make a statement in Parliament over the recent security breach in Lok Sabha.

On December 13, two persons jumped into the chambers of the lower house from the public gallery and set off smoke canisters. Six people, believed to have been involved in this incident, have been arrested by the police. Lok Sabha speaker, Om Birla, reiterated on Monday that a high-level probe is underway to investigate the breach.

The mass suspension of MPs from Parliament is being heavily criticized by the opposition, which has been calling it a ‘Murder of Democracy’ and a move aimed at ‘bulldozing Opposition.’ Congress leader, Jairam Ramesh has termed it a ‘Bloodbath.’ Rajya Sabha MP and Congress President, Mallikarjun Kharge wrote in a post on X – “With Opposition-less Parliament, Modi government can now bulldoze important pending legislations, crush any dissent, without any debate.” The leaders of INDIA or Indian National Developmental, Inclusive Alliance, a conglomeration of various opposition political parties, have also condemned this move. They have accused the Modi government of being ‘autocratic’ and ‘throwing democratic norms into the dustbin.’ A meeting of floor leaders of various parties is expected to take place today at Mallikarjun Kharge’s office to deliberate on their next course of action.

This is not the first time that something like this has happened. For instance, in 1989, 63 MPs were suspended from Parliament. Though Home Minister Amit Shah is yet to make a statement in Parliament on last week’s security lapse, he accused the opposition of politicizing this issue during an interview recently. At the same time, it must be noted that no action has yet been taken against BJP MP Pratap Sinha, who facilitated passes to the intruders who created a panic in Lok Sabha last week.
