On April 22, the chief electoral officer announced the re-polling would take place in 11 voting places. These places are spread over five assembly segments in the constituencies of Inner Manipur. All of these election centres were notified about shootings and mob violence. There were a few unsuccessful attempts to capture polling booths during the first round of the 2024 Lok Sabha Election, which started on April 19.

The Election Commission’s order to declare the votes conducted at these stations on April 19 invalid and arrange for new polling is what prompted this decision.

The official stated that three polling places in Uripok and one in Konthoujam in Imphal West district, four in Kshetrigao and one in Thongju in Imphal East district, and Moirangkampu Sajeb and Thongam Leikai in the Khurai constituency are the impacted polling places scattered over Inner Manipur.

The Manipur Congress, led by President K. Meghachandra, expressed concerns over electoral integrity earlier in the day. He also demanded re-election at 47 stations. They specifically demanded action at 36 stations in the Inner Manipur constituency and 11 in the Outer Manipur constituency, alleging booth grabbing and rigging.

During the first phase of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections on April 19, there were various reports of booth grabbing. As well as reports of shooting, intimidation, and destruction of electronic voting machines (EVMs) at various polling places surfaced in Manipur, a state gripped by strife. Since May of last year, the state has been dealing with ethnic conflict.

One civilian was reported injured in the same fire event, and fighting was reported at a polling place in Moirangkampu Sajeb Awang Leikai, Imphal, Manipur, during the Lok Sabha elections.

It is needless to say that the different political parties would take this incident as their voting agenda. During this volatile time, the BJP and the Congress have both accused one another of inciting violence. The Indian National Congress Party and Bharatiya Janata Party both blamed each other for breaking the election model code of conduct. Manipur is an important voting centre.

Manipur has a history of strong voter turnout, as evidenced by the astounding 82% turnout in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, despite ongoing conflicts.

The Second Phase of the Lok Sabha Election

As for the second phase of the 2024 Lok Sabha election, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah have already scheduled public rallies in Chhattisgarh over the next three days. This rally is expected to intensify the second phase of the campaign. As for the first phase, the senior leader of the BJP addressed public meetings in various places in the nation.

On April 22, Amit Shah will speak at a public gathering at the Kanker Lok Sabha seat in the Bastar district. On April 23 and 24, PM Modi is scheduled to speak at campaign rallies in the Lok Sabha constituencies of Sarguja, Mahasamund, and Janjgir-Champa.
