A new study has revealed alarming data about the escalating threat of land subsidence in China, particularly in its urban regions. Researchers estimate that about a third of China’s urban population is at risk, with the potential for China’s urban area below sea level to triple by 2120, affecting 55 to 128 million residents.

This phenomenon, primarily caused by human activities like groundwater withdrawal, poses a significant risk to cities such as Shanghai and Beijing. The research, conducted by a team including experts from the University of East Anglia, UK, analysed satellite data from 82 cities, including Beijing and Shanghai, home to nearly 700 million people.

They found that 45% of the urban land area studied was sinking, with 16% experiencing a rapid subsidence rate of 10 millimetres per year. The impact of this subsidence extends beyond immediate physical changes. It can also exacerbate climate change and sea-level rise, particularly affecting coastal cities like Tianjin. Shanghai, for instance, has subsided up to 3 metres over the past century.

The researchers emphasise the importance of integrating subsidence into adaptation and resilience plans. Failure to do so could lead to the destruction of lives and infrastructure in the coming decades. They call for a strong societal response to address this pressing issue.
