Kannada actress Ranya Rao has been making headlines after being caught on Monday night while returning from Dubai and subsequently jailed for allegedly smuggling over 14.2 kg of gold, valued at ₹12.56 crore. Her stepfather, Ramachandra Rao, the Director General of Police (DGP) of Karnataka State Police Housing Corporation, stated that he was completely unaware of her and her husband, Jatin Hukkeri’s, business dealings. Calling the incident a “huge disappointment,” he confirmed that Ranya had not visited his house since her marriage four months ago.
Authorities suspect Ranya attempted to leverage her connections to evade customs checks. The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) revealed that she concealed part of the smuggled gold in clothing. Following her arrest, she was presented before a special financial offenses court on March 4 and placed in judicial custody until March 18.
Ranya Rao, known for her roles in films like Maanikya and Pataki, reportedly claimed her Dubai visit was for business, though officials suspect it was linked to illegal gold importation. Before being remanded, she underwent a medical examination at Bengaluru’s Bowring Hospital. Meanwhile, Jatin Hukkeri’s office has not issued any statement on the matter. DGP Ramachandra Rao reiterated that the law would take its course in the case.
