Ranbir Kapoor’s Animal Sets the Box Office on Fire, Sparks Polarized Reactions
Ranbir Kapoor’s latest film, “Animal,” directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, has set the box office on fire, crossing the 100 crore mark within just two days of its release. Surpassing Shah Rukh Khan’s “Jawan,” it became the second-fastest film to achieve this milestone. By its third day, the movie soared past the 200 crore mark, defying expectations despite its A certificate from the censor board.
Audiences are captivated by Ranbir Kapoor’s stellar performance, with fans even sharing videos of celebratory firecrackers lighting up cinema halls across the internet.
However, the film’s success is accompanied by a wave of polarization among viewers. At the trailer launch of this film, Vanga promised a level of violence even more than his previous films, such as Kabir Singh or Arjun Reddy. However, no amount of warning could have prepared the viewers for the absolute mayhem this movie entails. The bloodbath involved in this movie is very rare in Indian cinema.
Several people have praised the action set pieces in the movie; however, for many, it was an unforgettable toe-curling experience. The almost twenty-minute-long scene where we see Ranbir’s character, Vijay, going on a rampage wearing a blood-soaked kurta, lungi, and red sneakers while wielding an axe and wreaking havoc on everything in his sight has become one of the most talked-about scenes from the movie.
In another scene, we find Vijay using a tank-sized machine gun to eliminate his enemies. Many loved that scene, but many were left confused by the practicality of it. The violence and bloodshed in this movie aren’t everyone’s cup of tea.
“Animal” is also under fire for how Vanga constantly tries to posture the hero as an “alpha male”. It has been heavily scrutinized how Ranvijay, throughout the film, tries to dominate everyone through his influential status and violence. Female film critics have especially accused this film of being worse than Reddy’s previous ventures. Several parts of the movie have been deemed outright misogynistic and disrespectful towards women.
The polarized views of the audience can be confirmed by how netizens have gone on to call this film “Family Drama on Steroids,” Rashmika as another Preety, and hail the film as “Ranbir’s 3-hour-long cigarette commercial.” However, people like director Ram Gopal Varma have praised the film and its direction. It seems like the debate on the moral standpoint of this film and its protagonist will be a long-drawn affair.
