In a recent GOP debate in Miami, Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy stirred controversy by labelling Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as a Nazi. Ramaswamy, a self-described ‘anti-woke’ multi-millionaire, commented when questioned about Zelenskyy’s push for increased U.S. aid for Ukraine.
Accusing Ukraine of not being a democracy due to its alleged suppression of opposition parties and control of media, Ramaswamy asserted, “It has celebrated a Nazi in its ranks. A comedian in cargo pants. The man called Zelenskyy. Doing it in their own ranks — that is not democratic.”
The remark sparked immediate criticism, prompting Ramaswamy’s campaign team to clarify that he did not intend to label Zelenskyy as a Nazi. Campaign spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin stated that Ramaswamy spoke quickly and “kind of oscillated in his words.” The clarification referred to an episode in which Canadian lawmakers celebrated a Ukrainian WWII veteran associated with a Nazi division during Zelenskyy’s visit.
However, a fact check by Business Insider revealed a crucial omission in the campaign team’s reference. Zelenskyy had no involvement in the invitation to the Nazi veteran for his speech before Canadian lawmakers. Contrary to Ramaswamy’s assertion, Zelenskyy is Jewish, with family members killed during the Holocaust. The Ukrainian leader has consistently invoked the Nazi genocide when discussing Russia’s war against his nation.
Ramaswamy’s choice of words adds to a series of controversial statements during the GOP debates. The incident raises concerns about the accuracy of information presented and the potential impact of such statements on diplomatic relations and public perception. As the criticism mounts, the incident underscores the importance of nuanced and fact-checked discourse in the political arena.
