Rajnath Singh to Meet Maldivian Counterpart on January 8 to Strengthen Bilateral Defence Ties

New Delhi: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is scheduled to meet Maldives Defence Minister Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon in New Delhi on Wednesday, January 8 to discuss ways to boost defence cooperation between the two countries. The discussions will cover key areas such as training, joint exercises, defence projects, and measures to enhance the capabilities of the Maldives National Defence Forces.
The Maldives Defence Minister will be on a three-day visit to India from January 8 to 10. During his visit, he will also visit Goa and Mumbai for further activities.
In a press release, the Ministry of Defence stated, “Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh will hold a bilateral meeting with the Defence Minister of the Maldives, Mr. Mohammed Ghassan Maumoon, in New Delhi on January 8, 2025. The discussions will focus on reviewing various aspects of bilateral defence cooperation, including training, regular exercises, workshops, seminars, defence projects, and the supply of defence equipment and stores to enhance the operational capabilities of the Maldives National Defence Forces.”
The release also highlighted the strong historical and cultural ties between the two nations, stating, “India and the Maldives share spiritual, historical, linguistic, and ethnic bonds. The Maldives holds a prominent place in India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy, which aims to foster stability and prosperity in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). Both countries are critical players in maintaining the security of the IOR, supporting India’s vision of Security and Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR).”
Meanwhile, Maldives Foreign Minister Abdullah Khaleel recently completed his first official visit to India. During his visit, which ended on Sunday, Khaled held high-level discussions and signed important agreements aimed at strengthening bilateral ties.
Khalil met External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and reviewed the comprehensive bilateral relations between the two countries. Their discussions focused on exploring new areas of cooperation, including infrastructure development, socio-economic initiatives, and advancing development projects.
The visit also included an important milestone, as a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on High Impact Community Development Projects (HICDP). The agreement marks the start of the third phase of project-based cooperation, targeting grassroots improvements to deliver tangible benefits to communities in the Maldives.
Khalil expressed gratitude for India’s continued support in addressing the financial challenges facing the Maldives and underlined the importance of the partnership in promoting economic stability.
