In a major infrastructure push along the China border and remote areas, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will dedicate 75 projects worth ₹2,236 crore to the nation on October 12. These include roads and bridges aimed at enhancing military mobility and logistical support for forces stationed in forward areas across Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh, officials said. This comes as China continues its infrastructure expansion along the border over the past five years.

During his visit to Sikkim from October 11-12, Singh will inaugurate the strategic Kupup-Sherathang road and virtually launch 74 additional projects in West Bengal, Nagaland, Mizoram, Rajasthan, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. With this, the number of Border Roads Organisation (BRO) projects dedicated this year will reach 111, valued at ₹3,751 crore.

Singh will also celebrate Dussehra (October 12) with soldiers stationed at the mountain frontier and address the Army Commanders’ conference in Gangtok on October 11—the first time this meeting is being held near the China border. This is symbolically significant as the India-China military standoff in eastern Ladakh enters its fifth year, with unresolved issues along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). Despite ongoing negotiations, India hopes to restore the status quo in April 2020.

Singh will inaugurate 22 roads, 51 bridges, and two other projects built by the BRO under challenging conditions. These include 19 projects in J&K, 11 in Ladakh (a key area of border tensions with China), 18 in Arunachal Pradesh, and several others across Uttarakhand, Sikkim, Himachal Pradesh, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Nagaland, Mizoram, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The BRO completed these projects in record time, using advanced technology.

Among the notable projects this year is the Sela Tunnel, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in March. Built at a cost of ₹825 crore, it significantly boosts military mobility in the strategic Tawang sector, where Indian forces are stationed near the contested China border. This tunnel is the world’s longest twin-lane tunnel at over 13,000 feet.

Last year, 125 BRO projects worth ₹3,611 crore were dedicated to the nation, enhancing India’s defence capabilities along its northern and western borders. Over the past five years, the BRO has completed 450 projects valued at ₹16,000 crore, including roads, bridges, tunnels, airfields, and helipads. India is racing to close the infrastructure gap with China, whose developments along the border are confirmed by satellite images showing new airbases, missile sites, roads, bunkers, and more.

This rapid infrastructure expansion is critical for military mobility, logistics, and civilian access in border states. The first leg of the Army Commanders’ conference, held in Sikkim, emphasizes India’s focus on ground realities amid ongoing tensions with China. The second phase will be held in Delhi on October 28-29, focusing on national security, global geopolitics, and operational strategies. Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi recently described the situation along the LAC in eastern Ladakh as “stable but sensitive,” highlighting the loss of trust between the Indian and Chinese armies due to the prolonged standoff.
