Rajeev Chandrasekhar, a union minister and NDA contender for Thiruvananthapuram, caused controversy when he claimed in a condolence message that Kerala was experiencing flooding and that many lives had been lost.
The Union Minister received harsh criticism from leaders of the ruling CPI(M) and a few other parties, and trolls took to the internet in droves.
In Malayalam, Chandrasekhar posted on social media, “I’m sorry to hear that Kerala’s floods have claimed a great number of lives. I send the families of the deceased my sympathies. I’m hoping for a speedy recovery for those who were hurt.” Later on, he removed the post.
Although Kerala is receiving a lot of rain and there have been reports of waterlogging in several areas, the state is not in danger of flooding.
General Education Minister V Sivankutty made fun of the Union Minister for his assertion that the state is experiencing flooding, implying that he may have seen the film “2018,” which is based on the 2018 Kerala floods. He went on to say that Chandrasekhar might have avoided such mistakes if he made periodic trips to Kerala rather than only during election seasons.
Arya Rajendran, the mayor of Thiruvananthapuram, also posted a picture from the 2018 film and enquired as to whether or not it puzzled him. She commented, “Someone should tell him this is a movie.”
Memes and sardonic responses to the message have been widely shared on social media by left-leaning and Congress accounts.
As this was going on, the state saw more and more intense downpours, which caused waterlogging in low-lying regions of numerous large towns, including Thrissur, Kochi, Kozhikode, and Thiruvananthapuram.
Numerous areas have also received alerts in the colors red and orange. The state’s citizens were encouraged to exercise caution by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. In Kerala, numerous rain-related accidents have resulted in the deaths of at least four persons in recent days.
