Rajasthan is Leading India’s Transition to Renewable Energy, with Gujarat Following Closely After
According to experts, renewable energy sources account for 64.5% of Rajasthan’s power-generating capacity, which is significantly greater than Gujarat’s energy basket’s 47%.
With approximately 26,800 MW of installed renewable energy capacity, Rajasthan is leading India’s move to green energy. Gujarat is following closely after, with the goal of overtaking Rajasthan as the top in renewable energy within the next few years.
“We’ve already surpassed Tamil Nadu as the leading state in wind power generation. We presently rank second among states in terms of solar electricity generation. However, with the commissioning of a 30000 MW renewable energy park in Khavda, Kutch, in the coming years, Gujarat will overtake Rajasthan as the leading player in solar energy,” said Mahesh Babu, managing director of Gujarat Power Corporation Ltd. (GPCL), the state government’s nodal agency for renewable energy in Gujarat.
According to experts, renewable energy sources account for 64.5% of Rajasthan’s total power-producing capacity. This is far higher than the 47 percent renewable energy mix seen in Gujarat’s energy basket.
Rajasthan produced 39,300 million units of green energy in the first ten months of 2023–24, a threefold increase from the same time in 2019–20. In comparison, Gujarat, the country’s second-largest producer of renewable energy, generated 36,184 million units of green electricity during the first 10 months of the current fiscal year. This is double the amount of green energy produced by the state during the same ten-month period in 2019–20.
“India is set to meet its renewable energy objectives ahead of schedule, and the government is anticipated to alter them following the Lok Sabha elections. The sector is more profitable than it was 15 years ago. Aside from Rajasthan and Gujarat, states such as Maharashtra and Karnataka are projected to draw additional renewable energy projects in the future,” said a top executive of a business that is executing renewable energy projects in India.
Southern states like Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, which dominated the industry and were the leading producers of renewable energy in 2019–20, have since declined. Though renewable energy accounts for 67 and 55 percent of Karnataka’s total energy basket, respectively, much higher than that of Rajasthan and Gujarat, the renewable energy sector in Karnataka grew by 83%, while that in Tamil Nadu grew by 88%, during the five-year period 2019–23.
Karnataka generated 33,500 million units in the ten-month period, ranking third, followed by Tamil Nadu with 29,000 million units of green electricity. Andhra Pradesh grew the slowest among the top states producing renewable energy, with a growth rate of only 28 percent since 2019. Maharashtra, which now has the greatest thermal power (28,916 MW), increased its renewable energy generation by about 61% during the previous five years.
Companies such as Torrent Power are looking at states like Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Karnataka to complete their 1.7 GW of renewable energy projects that are now under development. The business plans to install 306 MW of grid-connected solar power plants in 48 places across Nasik district, Maharashtra, at a cost of ₹1540 crore.
The Mumbai-based Avaada Group, which announced the development of a 421 MW solar project in Gujarat earlier this month, stated that it intends to make use of the state’s ISTS connectivity. “The proposed projects, located in Kutch’s undeveloped wastelands, are estimated to generate around 17.5 billion units of green power each year. Through this initiative, we hope to not only exploit Gujarat’s enormous solar resources but also contribute to India’s renewable energy aspirations,” said Vineet Mittal, Chairperson of Avaada Group.
