On Thursday, the Rajasthan High Court granted bail to Mohammed Javed, one of the accused in the 2022 murder of Udaipur tailor Kanhaiya Lal. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested Javed in Udaipur on July 22, 2022. Kanhaiya Lal was brutally murdered on June 28, 2022, by Riyaz Attari and Ghous Mohammed, who beheaded him at his shop for expressing support for Nupur Sharma, a former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, over her controversial remarks on Prophet Mohammed.
The attackers recorded the killing on their mobile phones and issued a threat against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, posing with the knives used in the crime. Both were arrested within hours of the murder.
According to the NIA, Javed played a key role in the conspiracy by conducting surveillance and informing Attari and Ghous Mohammed about Kanhaiya Lal’s presence at his shop before the murder.
A report by the Hindustan Times indicated that the plan to kill Kanhaiya Lal through an ISIS-style beheading was formulated on June 20, 2022. During interrogation, Ghous Mohammed revealed that the decision to kill Kanhaiya Lal was made at a meeting, though those present have denied discussing any such plan. Ghous Mohammed claimed he volunteered to carry out the beheading, while others present agreed to provide legal, logistical, or financial support to the murderers’ families after the crime.
