In a shocking incident, supporters of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray vandalized a dance bar in Panvel, near Mumbai, following his speech condemning dance bars in Raigad district as “un-Marathi”. The attack, which occurred late Friday night, saw over a dozen men armed with sticks storming into the Night Riders bar and causing severe damage to the property.
The Incident
The vandalism was sparked by Thackeray’s fiery speech at a Kisan Mazdoor Party meeting in Panvel, where he questioned the presence of dance bars in Raigad district, citing it as the capital of Emperor Shivaji Maharaj. Thackeray’s supporters took his words as a cue, resorting to mob rule and vandalizing the dance bar around midnight.
Damage and Aftermath
The interior of the bar was ransacked, with tables broken, glasses shattered, and furniture damaged. Liquor bottles were also smashed during the rampage. MNS leader Sandip Deshpande justified the action as a “symbolic protest”, claiming the bars are illegal and the government should take notice.
Investigation and Action
The police have taken cognizance of the incident and started an investigation, collecting CCTV footage and recording witness statements for further action. This isn’t the first time Raj Thackeray’s supporters have been accused of violence; they have previously been accused of assaulting and abusing non-Marathi people and forcing non-native speakers to speak the local language.
