Rain in Andhra Pradesh Causes Widespread Flooding
Over the past two days, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh have been hit by heavy rains, leading to a minimum of 20 deaths in each state. The torrential downpours have caused widespread flooding, waterlogging, and significant interruptions to road and rail transportation networks.
Heavy rains from a depression have caused flooding in multiple districts, with the Vijayawada district in Andhra Pradesh being the most severely affected.
Schools in the Hyderabad district are closed due to the forecast of heavy rains, and the chief minister of Telangana has encouraged employees to do remote work.
The South Central Railway reported the cancellation of six trains on Monday (September 2) due to track flooding at multiple locations. The previous day, a total of 140 trains were canceled and 97 were diverted due to the overflowing rivers. National and state disaster response forces evacuated thousands of people from flooded areas to relief camps.
During a period of intense rainfall, A. Revanth Reddy, the Chief Minister of Telangana, decided to appeal to the Central Government to designate the floods in the state as a national calamity. The state government plans to correspond with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, requesting his presence in the flood-impacted regions of Telangana and also urging the Centre to officially declare the floods in the state as a national calamity.
On the social media site X, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said that he extended his deepest condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to the chief ministers of both states, assuring them of all possible help from the Centre.
