Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, currently touring the United States, sparked fresh controversy at an event with remarks about the Sikh community’s situation in India.
While speaking at a gathering in Washington, D.C., where, according to government sources, many pro-Khalistan Sikhs were present, Rahul “justified SFJ’s global Khalistan Referendum campaign” by stating: “The fight in India is whether a Sikh will be allowed to wear a turban and kada, go to gurdwara.”
Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) co-founder Gurpatwant Singh Pannun has since expressed support for the Congress leader’s stance. He said, “Rahul’s statement on the ‘existential threat to Sikhs in India’ is not only bold and pioneering but is also firmly grounded in the factual history of what Sikhs have been facing under successive regimes in India since 1947 and also corroborates SFJ’s stance on the justification for the Punjab Independence Referendum to establish the Sikh homeland, Khalistan.”
Government sources pointed to this as another example of the Congress MP’s reckless behavior. “This happens when you start speaking without briefing and out of turn,” one source remarked. “Speaking against the country outside gives momentum to people like Pannun. No Sikh is unhappy in India, and internal matters will be resolved internally.”
Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri also criticized Rahul Gandhi’s comments, arguing that his language resembled that of Khalistani separatist Pannun, who is wanted in India on terrorism charges. “Rahul’s language is quite similar to the fugitive from our law who lives in New York, Pannun… is he meeting him?” asked the minister.
