Rahul Gandhi’s Meeting with Wrestlers: A Political Move?
Possible Political Passage in Haryana
The latter assembly between Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and prominent wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia has sparked broad speculation around their potential entry into politics, especially with the upcoming Haryana Assembly elections in mind. This assembly appears to signal a significant shift, with the Congress potentially leveraging their popularity to solidify Jat votes and capitalize on the growing anti-incumbency sentiment against the BJP.
The Congress has been vocal in its support of the wrestlers, particularly after they raised serious allegations against the former Wrestling Federation of India chief, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who was also a BJP MP. By standing behind the wrestlers during their protests, the Congress positioned itself as an ally, which could now translate into political support in Haryana.
Potential Candidates: Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia
Vinesh Phogat, who hails from Charkhi Dadri, might possibly contest from her hometown or the Julana constituency in the Jind district, where her family has significant influence. However, contesting in Charkhi Dadri might lead to a “clash of the cousins” if the BJP fields her cousin, Babita Phogat, as their candidate. To avoid such a situation, Julana might be a more strategic choice for Vinesh.
Bajrang Punia, who also met with Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal, is rumored to be considering a run from his hometown, Badli. However, this could create a situation for the Congress, as the current MLA from Badli, Kuldeep Vats, is a strong political figure who previously defeated a prominent BJP leader. Venugopal suggested that if Punia doesn’t get a ticket, he might be given an important position within the Congress organization instead.
The Congress is likely to weigh these factors carefully, as bringing these star athletes into the fold could strengthen their appeal in a state where sports hold significant social importance. Including Phogat and Punia in their candidate line-up could give the Congress a competitive edge, especially in a state like Haryana, where regional pride and sports achievements resonate deeply with voters.
