Congress yesterday released a slew of 39 names who will be contesting for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. While addressing a press conference in New Delhi, the chief secretary & the Rajya Sabha MP Venugopal said that the list is supposed to be focusing on the winnability.
The party concluded the names in a meeting held by the central election committee members, similar names have been pitched, for instance, Rahul Gandhi from Wayanad, Kerala, CM of Chattisgarh Bhupesh Baghel from Rajnandgoan, and Venugopal from Alappuzha, Kerala, among many others. Interestingly, Venugopal has only two years left in his tenure so even if he wins he’ll eventually have to step down.
The Congress’s candidate list speaks volumes of its intention as it rolls out senior leaders in the core states where they were annihilated in 2019 elections. According to the Indian Express, it is rumored that the former party president Rahul Gandhi may re-contest from his old turf Amethi, where he had lost to Smriti Irani in 2019; there are also speculations on Priyanka Gandhi Vadra who might be a runner from Raebareli which has been the home ground of Sonia Gandhi since 2004.
Reportedly the list comprises 16 candidates from Kerala, 4 from Telangana, 2 from Meghalaya, 7 from Karnataka and 1 from Sikkim, Tripura, Nagaland, and Lakshadweep; the majority of members from the list are from SC/ST & OBC, and other marginalized communities and out of all 39 candidates, almost more than 30 are from the Southern regions like Karnataka, Kerala, and Tripura.
While addressing an issue of a seat conflict with Rahul Gandhi, CPI leader Annie Raja said, “Now whether they want to allow somebody from Kerala to contest seats or they want to bring their top-level leaders to defeat Left forces, that is for the Congress to decide.” She further said that it is up to the Congress to decide if it wants to fight the BJP or the left forces.
According to K.C Venugopal, another meeting is likely to be held on March 11 where candidates from UP will be discussed upon.
