New Delhi: Manipur Chief Minister Biren Singh has resigned. Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi claims the move was due to public pressure, a Supreme Court inquiry, and a no-confidence motion by the Congress.
Gandhi too was unrelenting in his criticism, accusing Singh of creating division in Manipur and Prime Minister Narendra Modi of keeping him in power despite prolonged violence.
“For nearly two years, BJP CM Biren Singh promoted division in Manipur. Prime Minister Modi allowed him to remain in office despite violence, loss of life, and destruction of the idea of India in Manipur,” Gandhi said on the X News channel.
He further said that Singh’s resignation was inevitable. He said, “Growing public pressure, a Supreme Court investigation, and Congress’ no-confidence motion have forced a compromise.”
Launching a direct attack on Modi, Gandhi demanded immediate action. “The most urgent priority is to restore peace and heal the wounds of the people. Prime Minister Modi should immediately visit Manipur, listen to the people, and finally explain his plan to bring back normalcy,” he said.
Singh submitted his resignation to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla at the Raj Bhavan. He was accompanied by BJP president A Sharda, North East in-charge Sambit Patra and 19 MLAs.
“It has been an honour for me to serve the people of Manipur,” Singh wrote in his resignation letter, expressing gratitude for the central government’s intervention and developmental efforts.
Manipur has been in the grip of ethnic violence since May 3, 2023, when a rally by the All Tribal Students Union Manipur (ATSUM) escalated tensions between the Meitei and Kuki communities following a High Court order regarding the inclusion of Meitei in the Scheduled Tribe list.
After Singh’s resignation, all eyes are now on the BJP and the central leadership as to how they deal with this crisis in the conflict-torn state.
