As decisions in Jammu and Kashmir approach, Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge have promised to restore statehood to the region if their party comes to power. During their two-day visit to the Union Territory, the leaders sought to gain support for the Congress party and explore potential alliances.
Promise to Restore Statehood
Speaking in Srinagar, Rahul Gandhi emphasized that his party is committed to ensuring that the people of Jammu and Kashmir regain their democratic rights through the restoration of statehood. He expressed disappointment that statehood had not been restored before the upcoming elections but remained confident that it would happen soon. Gandhi pointed out that this is the first time in India’s history that a state has been reduced to a Union Territory and made it clear that restoring statehood is a priority for the Congress party.
Criticism of PM Modi and Election Strategy
Rahul Gandhi also criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating that the opposition, especially the Congress and the INDIA alliance, has shaken Modi’s confidence. According to Gandhi, the Congress party’s focus on love, unity, and respect has undermined Modi’s mental confidence. He encouraged the youth of Jammu and Kashmir to counter hate with love and emphasized the importance of unity in the face of division.
Meanwhile, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge echoed Gandhi’s sentiments, calling PM Modi a “master of lies” and urging people not to trust him. Kharge assured the people of Jammu and Kashmir that the Congress is committed to restoring statehood and working for the welfare of the region. He highlighted the ongoing security challenges under Modi’s rule, noting the significant number of terror incidents and civilian deaths in the area.
Kharge expressed confidence in the Congress’s chances in the upcoming Assembly elections, predicting that the party would win 40–45 seats. He emphasized the party’s commitment to ensuring the region’s land and forests.
Alliance with National Conference
The Congress party is also in discussions with the National Conference (NC) to finalize a seat-sharing arrangement for the 90-seat Jammu and Kashmir Assembly. Following a meeting with NC leader Farooq Abdullah, it was reported that the pre-poll alliance between the two parties is progressing well. Abdullah expressed optimism about the partnership, noting that it is on track and expected to be officially confirmed soon.
The Congress party is currently exploring its strategies for the Assembly elections and is working towards a successful alliance with the National Conference to strengthen its position in Jammu and Kashmir.
