During a press conference at the AICC headquarters in New Delhi on Tuesday, Rahul Gandhi, the former Congress president, made a surprising claim that any attempts to target Gautam Adani and his Adani Group would result in state-sponsored hacking. He accused the government of employing “distraction politics” to draw attention away from the activities of the Adani Group.

Mr. Gandhi claims that Apple sent out alerts to people in his office, alerting them to attempts at “state-sponsored hacking.” He claimed that when the Adani Group came under investigation, intelligence services launched these kinds of hacking attempts. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s soul is with Adani-ji,” Mr. Gandhi stated without holding back, implying a close bond between the politician and the business tycoon.

“As soon as Adani is touched, intelligence agencies and snooping are deployed,” he continued. Prior to this, I believed that Amit Shah should be ranked third, Adani should be ranked second, and the prime minister should be ranked first. However, “this needs to be corrected. We now know that Adani is number one and PM is number two.”

The former head of the Congress party charged that the administration was engaging in “distraction politics” in an attempt to divert attention from the Adani Group’s purported monopolistic actions across the nation.

Mr. Gandhi made it clear that he was unfazed by these purported hacking and surveillance attempts. “We are not scared,” he said. “You can tap as many phones as you want; I don’t mind. If you want my phone, I’ll give it to you.”

Regardless of caste or socioeconomic status, he contended that the wealth of the people was concentrated in the hands of a small number of people, creating monopolies and fueling rising unemployment and inequality.

Mr. Gandhi called for a caste census to address these inequalities and allocate resources based on population data, as part of his recent outreach to the Other Backward Classes (OBC).

Mr. Gandhi said in his concluding remarks that the government was attempting to stifle the opposition as a whole and called these purported hacking and surveillance attempts a sign of panic. He goes on to say, “This is against the entire Opposition…This is the work of thieves and criminals.”

Mr. Gandhi’s words were echoed by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, who also got a similar message from Apple. According to Kharge, the Modi administration is working toward a single goal: “Save Adani and destroy democracy.”

In his statement, Kharge expressed the people’s resolve, emphasizing that “INDIA, that is Bharat, will not be intimidated by such threats.”

A new political storm has erupted in India as a result of Mr. Gandhi’s revelations and accusations, prompting inquiries about the relationship between powerful business interests and political power.
