Israel launched airstrikes on southern Gaza’s Rafah on Thursday, targeting an area where approximately 1.4 million Palestinians had been seeking refuge. Despite efforts by nations to broker a ceasefire in the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, no signs of cessation have emerged. However, a US envoy was anticipated in Israel on Thursday to pursue a truce.

More than four months of relentless fighting, strikes, and bombardment have devastated much of Gaza, resulting in civilian casualties, predominantly among women and children, pushing around 2.4 million remaining Palestinians to the brink of famine, according to the UN.

The airstrikes on Rafah have further worsened the situation in Gaza, escalating violence and civilian casualties where around 1.4 million Palestinians are seeking refuge living in makeshift tents and crowded shelters with limited access to food, facing threats of diseases.

Israel has issued a warning that if Hamas does not release remaining hostages held in Gaza by the start of Ramadan, they will continue their offensive, even during the Muslim holy month, including in Rafah.

Israel had previously targeted some locations in Rafah, which were struck again overnight on Thursday. The campaign on Gaza has so far resulted in approximately 29,410 fatalities, predominantly women and children.
