Radhasoami Satsang Bhawan: The High Court Directs to Maintain the Status Quo On Land in Agra until Oct 5
On a plot of land in Dayal Bagh, Agra, where Radhasoami Satsang Bhawan is located, the High Court of Allahabad issued an order on Wednesday directing that the status quo be maintained until October 5.
On a petition filed by Radhasoami Satsang Sabha, contesting a demolition process being carried out by the Agra administration, Justice Manish Kumar Nigam presided over a single-judge court that issued the ruling.
When a revenue crew arrived at the disputed site to remove the “illegal” building on September 24, a fight broke out between Satsang Sabha members and police. In the incident, several people suffered injuries.
The Radhasoami Satsang Bhawan is situated on a tract of property in Dayalbagh, Agra. On Wednesday, the High Court of Allahabad issued an order mandating that things stay as they are until October 5.
Justice Manish Kumar Nigam presided over a single-judge bench that rendered the decision on a petition filed by Radhasoami Satsang Sabha disputing a demolition procedure being carried out by the Agra administration.
State lawyers rejected the petition, claiming that the building was built by intruding on the neighboring property. The court, however, ruled that the arguments must be heard on the next hearing date, October 5.
The gates built on public property connecting the city with the villages around the Yamuna River were the source of controversy.
On September 23, district authorities and police arrived at the disputed property and dismantled several of the “illegal” structures, including the gates. However, the gates were once more built by Radhasoami Satsang Sabha members.
On September 24, some 200 Satsang Sabha members, including women and children, demonstrated against the Agra administration’s action and threw stones to halt the demolition campaign.
Later, a police report was filed at the New Agra police station accusing Satsang Sabha members of interfering with the demolition campaign and trespassing on government property.
Suraj Kumar, Deputy Commissioner of Police, stated that the Revenue Department has requested the use of police force to clear Radhasoami Satsang Sabha’s illegal encroachment in Dayal Bagh. The Sabha members interfered with the demolition process and started throwing stones. As a result, numerous police officers were hurt. The effort to clear encroachments has been put on hold for the time being.
