In a desperate bid to save the lives of approximately 40 workers trapped inside a partially collapsed tunnel in Uttarkashi, rescue teams from various agencies are working tirelessly to clear the debris and reach the stranded individuals. The incident occurred between Silkyara and Dandalgaon on the Brahmakhal-Yamunotri national highway during the early hours of Sunday when a section of the under-construction tunnel gave way.
As the clock ticks, authorities have made significant progress in establishing contact with the trapped workers. An oxygen pipe has been strategically inserted into the collapsed portion of the tunnel, ensuring a continuous supply of air to those trapped behind the rubble. Uttarkashi Superintendent of Police, Arpan Yaduvanshi, reported that efforts are also underway to provide essential supplies such as water and food through the debris.
The rescue operation involves around 160 personnel from both national and state disaster response forces, as depicted in videos and photographs documenting the intense excavation efforts within the dark tunnel. Reports from Uttarkashi Circle Officer Anuj Kumar suggest that approximately 20 meters of debris have been cleared, with an additional 40 meters to go. Authorities remain cautiously optimistic, expecting the debris to be fully cleared within the next day.
The tunnel in question is a crucial component of the Himalayan Char Dham road project, a flagship initiative by the Indian government aimed at enhancing connectivity in Uttarakhand and facilitating easier access to important pilgrimage sites. The ambitious project encompasses a highway infrastructure spanning approximately 825 kilometers.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami personally inspected the rescue site on Monday, emphasizing the urgency of the operation. He assured the public that the trapped workers are in stable condition and have been provided with sustenance. Chief Minister Dhami stated, “The men are fine. We are collaborating with experts on the rescue. The prime minister, the home minister, and the railway minister are in touch. We briefed the prime minister in detail. We assure the men’s families that they will be brought out soon.”
While investigations into the cause of the collapse are underway, the immediate focus remains on the successful rescue of the workers. The Chief Minister’s assurance, coupled with the ongoing efforts of the dedicated rescue teams, provides a glimmer of hope in the midst of this challenging situation. The entire nation watches with bated breath as the race against time continues to unfold beneath the debris in Uttarkashi.
