The visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to North Korea has marked the beginning of a new alliance. The lavish meeting between the two presidents concluded with the signing of a pact to protect each other, even if one is at war or invaded by another country.

The deepening ties between Moscow and Pyongyang have prompted South Korea to consider providing military assistance to Ukraine. Until now, South Korea has never armed any nation at war; it has only provided humanitarian aid and healthcare support.

In a statement, Vladimir Putin warned South Korea that it would be making a big mistake if it arms Ukraine in the war against Russia. Putin said, “that Moscow would make a decision that would not be in favor of South Korea but against its leadership if it supplies arms to Ukraine.”

The South Korean government is currently concerned about the growing alliance between the nuclear-armed states, which could pose a threat to South Korea’s national security, given that both Korean nations share a border.

Putin also made it clear that he is willing to arm Pyongyang if the US and its allies continue supplying Ukraine with weapons. “Those who supply these weapons believe that they are not at war with us. I said, including in Pyongyang, that we then reserve the right to supply weapons to other regions of the world,” Mr. Putin stated.

Seoul’s concern over the Russian-North Korean agreement as the biggest threat to its national security has led the country’s national security adviser, Chang Ho-jin, to say that South Korea plans to reconsider the issue of arms support to Ukraine.

The South Korean government has also summoned the Russian ambassador, Georgy Zinoviev, to protest the pact, demanding that Moscow “immediately cease” military cooperation with Pyongyang.

Meanwhile, US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby commented on the Russian-North Korean agreement, saying it should “be of concern to any country that cares about maintaining peace and stability” in the region. He also noted that the agreement should come as no surprise since the US had been consistently warning that both countries were seeking to strengthen their defense relationship.
