On Wednesday, 13 September 2023, Russian President Vladimir Putin hosted the North Korean leader Kim Jong Un at Vostochny Space Centre, Russia’s new space launch station. The discussions regarding the war in Ukraine, military matters, and the potential Russian help to the communist state in developing its space program dominated the talks between the leaders.
The North Korean leader extended his support to Russia in its conflicts with Ukraine. He was confident Moscow would win in what it calls the “special military operations” in Ukraine. It was followed by a toast to President Putin’s health and Korea-Russia friendship.
“The Russian army and people will certainly win a great victory in the sacred struggle for the punishment of a great evil that claims hegemony and feeds an expansionist illusion,” Kim added, raising his glass.
When Russian reporters, who were given special access to the meeting, asked Putin if Russia would assist Kim in building satellites, Putin said, “That’s why we came here.” Several hints were also dropped about military cooperation between the countries, but few details were disclosed. The conference provided an opportunity for Russia to nudge the United States, a major supporter of Ukraine, though it was unclear how far Putin was willing to go in satisfying any North Korean technical wish lists.
