In an affidavit submitted to the Punjab and Haryana High Court, the police referenced video clips of Amritpal Singh’s inflammatory speeches.
The Punjab police claimed on Saturday that radical Sikh preacher Amritpal Singh and his associates pose a significant threat to the life of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, as well as to law and order in the state. These claims were made in an affidavit submitted to the Punjab and Haryana High Court, where the police cited video clips recorded outside the Ajnala police station, according to a report by the Times of India.
In these clips, Amritpal can be heard stating that the chief minister’s actions could lead to him suffering the same fate as former Chief Minister Beant Singh, who was assassinated in a suicide bombing at the state secretariat in August 1995. “We warned CM Mann not to follow the path of CM Beant Singh… CM Mann is still heading down the same road. Dilawar acted as a human bomb and killed CM Beant Singh… CM Mann has ensured that several more like Dilawar have emerged from the crowd today,” Amritpal is reportedly heard saying in the videos.
The police expressed concern that such statements could mislead the youth into viewing the assassination of a democratically elected chief minister as a “heroic act.” The police also voiced apprehension that Amritpal Singh and his associates might commit serious illegal acts against those who oppose their radical views. “If he takes the law into his own hands and harms anyone who disagrees with his ideology, as he has done recently, it could lead to a severe breakdown of law and order, public order, and the state’s security,” the police noted in the affidavit. These affidavits are part of the police’s response to petitions filed by Amritpal’s associates, Sarabjeet Singh Kalsi and Gurmeet Singh Gill, who challenged their fresh detention orders issued by the Punjab government under the National Security Act (NSA) in March 2024.
