The Government Railway Police (GRP) in Bathinda, Punjab, recovered nine iron rods from the tracks of the Delhi-Bathinda Express on Sunday. The motive behind the incident remains unclear, and a case has been registered against unknown individuals as investigations continue.

“Nine iron rods were recovered from the site. A case has been filed, and further investigation is underway,” said Shavinder Kumar, Investigating Officer, GRP Bathinda.

Across the country, several suspicious items have recently been found along railway tracks, which investigators believe may be part of attempts to derail trains. A major accident was narrowly avoided on Sunday when the loco pilot of a goods train applied emergency brakes after spotting a gas cylinder on the tracks near Prempur station in Uttar Pradesh. “Railway IOW (Inspector of Works), security, and other teams inspected the cylinder and removed it from the tracks. It was determined that the 5-litre cylinder was empty. Directions have been given to investigate the incident,” said the CPRO, North Central Railway. Another potential disaster was averted on September 20 when the loco pilot of the Doon Express spotted iron rods placed horizontally on tracks in Rampur, Uttar Pradesh, and quickly applied the brakes. Officials suspect it may have been an act of attempted sabotage.

Additionally, on September 19, a six-meter-long iron rod was discovered on the tracks between Bilaspur Road and Rudrapur City in Rajasthan’s Ajmer district. The Indian Railways reported that the train was safely halted, and the journey resumed after the track was cleared. An FIR was filed at the GRP Police Station under the Railways Act 1989 against unidentified individuals.
