The Pune bus rape accused, Dattatray Ramdas Gade, referred to the 26-year-old survivor as ‘didi’ (sister) before luring her into an empty ‘Shiv Shahi’ bus at the Swargate depot, where he raped her, police informed the court on Friday.
According to a PTI report, the 37-year-old accused has a criminal record, with at least six cases registered against him in Pune and Ahilyanagar districts. CCTV footage from the bus terminal on the day of the incident clearly captured his presence.
Police stated that they have yet to recover data from the mobile phone he was using. Among the six cases against Gade, women are the complainants in five of them.
On Friday, a Pune court remanded Gade to police custody until March 12. He was apprehended in a paddy field in Shirur tehsil, Pune district, following an extensive search operation that utilised drones, sniffer dogs, and 13 police teams. While technology played a role, officials said human intelligence ultimately led to his capture.
Gade was formally arrested and presented before the Pune Sessions Court under heavy police security. The police requested 14 days of custody in their remand application.
Fearing arrest, Gade attempted suicide by hanging himself from a dry tree in a field, but the rope broke, thwarting his attempt.
“According to the initial medical report, a ligature mark was found on the accused, suggesting an attempted suicide. We are awaiting the final report,” Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar told PTI.
Authorities had paused their search in the sugarcane fields at night but later received a tip-off that Gade had visited a house asking for food. When police arrived, he managed to escape, though the family had provided him with a bottle of water, an official added.
