A shocking development occurs in the alleged rape case involving a 22-year-old IT professional in Pune. Police revealed on Friday that the man initially suspected was not a stranger but a friend of the complainant. The woman has since confessed that she filed the complaint in a moment of anger, which casts doubt on the credibility of her initial claims.

Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar said the woman had earlier alleged that a man, posing as a courier agent, entered her Kondhwa apartment and raped her. However, investigations have now confirmed that the accused was someone she knew and had invited over.

“There was no forced entry and no spray used. The accused was an acquaintance,” Kumar told reporters.

CCTV Evidence Contradicts Original Statement

The alleged incident, reported to have occurred on Wednesday evening, prompted a swift and thorough probe. CCTV footage from the housing society exposed inconsistencies in the woman’s narrative, showing a man she knew entering the premises — not an unknown assailant.

“When shown the CCTV image of the man, the woman initially refused to recognize him,” Kumar said.
Despite her denial, the police pursued further technical leads, including tracking the suspect’s motorcycle and mobile phone location. These efforts confirmed that he had indeed visited the woman’s residence.

Selfie and Threat Message Fabricated by Victim

A critical element of the original complaint was that the alleged attacker took a selfie with the woman’s phone and left a threatening message, saying he would leak the images. However, Kumar clarified that the woman took the selfie consensually and likely typed the threatening message on her phone herself after the man had left.

Complaint Filed Amid Emotional Turmoil

Upon questioning, the woman admitted that she lodged the false complaint while experiencing emotional distress. “She stated that her mental state was unstable, which led her to file the complaint,” Kumar noted.

He emphasised the scale of the resources used in the investigation, including extensive CCTV review and personnel deployment. “The investigation was misdirected based on misleading information,” he said.
Although a final decision on legal action against the woman has yet to be made, police are continuing to examine various aspects of the case.
