A 19-year-old engineering student was arrested by Pune police for allegedly assaulting his room partner using a belt when the roommate refused to appear as a dummy candidate in his place for an examination.

An FIR was lodged by the victim against the accused at the Kondhwa Police Station on Saturday, who was arrested by the police the following day. According to the press, the accused and the victim are both first-year engineering students at a Pune college who shared a room.

Police said that the accused allegedly forced the complainant to appear as a dummy candidate in his place for the “engineering graphics” examination on January 12. Upon refusing his request, his room partner then assaulted him using a belt, leaving the complainant injured, said the police.

The police have started the investigation on the matter, and the accused has been charged with Section 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapon or means), and 506 (Punishment for criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code. Police Sub-Inspector Balaji Digole will be the one investigating.

The news itself is shocking and raises concerns over student culture. Therefore, it is advised to both parents and educational practitioners to address and discipline such behaviors.
