New Delhi: Obscene and inflammatory graffiti aimed at religious communities was discovered on May 7 in the bathroom of a women’s hostel at a reputed engineering college in Nitte, located in Karnataka’s Udupi district, according to police.
The slogans, written in English, appeared intended to incite communal tensions, police said. The hostel manager reported the writings to local authorities, following which the Karkala Rural Police registered a case under Section 353(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita — dealing with spreading false information or rumours to promote enmity between groups.
Udupi SP Arun K. confirmed that an investigation is underway, with CCTV footage being reviewed and students being questioned. Preliminary findings suggest possible involvement of a female student, though no one has been identified yet.
The incident has triggered alarm over rising communal polarisation within educational spaces. As of now, the college administration has not released an official statement.
