The 35-foot statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji collapsed, leading Uddhav Thackeray, the Shiv Sena (UBT) chief, to criticize the Eknath Shinde government in Maharashtra for its failure. Uddhav Thackeray expressed dissatisfaction with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s apology for the statue collapse, calling it arrogant and stating that the people of the state had rejected it.
Just 8 months ago, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Shivaji statue at Sindhudurg, a project that was executed through the collaborative efforts of the Navy and the state government. However, recent developments reveal that the structural consultant and contractor for the project have been arrested by the police. They are facing serious charges, including attempted murder, culpable homicide, and endangering the lives and safety of others.
Addressing a gathering at the “jode maro” protest over the collapse of the Maratha ruler’s statue, Mr. Thackeray confidently drew a parallel between the statue’s collapse and the issues faced by the Ram Temple in Ayodhya and the new Parliament complex.
The leader of Shiv Sena (UBT) criticized the Prime Minister’s apology, calling it arrogant. He questioned the purpose of the apology, whether it was for the statue’s inauguration eight months ago or the corruption involved. The leader urged the MVA cadre to unite and defeat the forces that have insulted Shivaji Maharaj, emphasizing that the collapse of the statue is an insult to the soul of Maharashtra.
The Opposition’s protest has been criticized by the BJP and its ally, the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, for politicizing the issue even after receiving an apology from the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister expressed heartfelt reverence towards Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj as he acknowledged the profound significance of the revered figure in the lives of the people. With utmost humility, he sought forgiveness from both the deity and those affected by the unfortunate incident.
Mr. Thackeray said, “We are fighting for the state’s glory. We are here to say ‘get out’ to the Mahayuti government.” Top leaders of the INDIA bloc in Maharashtra took part in the protest march at Gateway of India. Thackeray, Pawar, and Patole condemned the collapse of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s statue in Sindhudurg as an example of corruption and an insult to Shivaji’s followers.
The Chief Minister, Eknath Shinde, criticized the Opposition, stating that Shivaji should not be a political matter. He expressed that the recent incident involving the uprooting of Shivaji Maharaj’s statue in Karnataka was regrettable. The Chief Minister emphasized the significance of Shivaji as a matter of identity and faith. He also expressed disapproval of the Opposition’s politicization of the issue.
