Peaceful demonstrations in Kenya turned deadly when police used force to expel protesters who were raising their voices against the proposed tax bill in parliament.
The new finance bill, which received around 195 votes in favor and 106 votes against, is awaiting the president’s signature to become law.
What Does the Bill Say?
The Finance Bill 2024 proposes increasing the sales tax on various products and services, such as a 16% VAT on bread, a 25% excise duty on vegetable oil, and new taxes on digital transactions and income for those in the national medical insurance plan.
This proposed bill has caused widespread anger among citizens, leading to mass demonstrations near the parliament building. Many protesters argue that the bill significantly increases taxes on essential items and services, which would be unaffordable for ordinary citizens already struggling with high living costs in the country.
Despite some changes made by lawmakers, protesters are demanding the complete rejection of the bill.
Protest and Response
During the protest, nearly five people were killed and 31 were wounded when police opened fire on the demonstrators. Protesters breached barricades, stormed the parliament complex, and caused significant damage, including setting parts of the building on fire.
President William Ruto called the protests “treasonous” and claimed they were hijacked by dangerous individuals. To handle the unrest, the government deployed the military to support the police in response to the security emergency caused by the violent protests.
The conduct of Kenyan police and the government’s handling of the protests could attract global attention, especially considering Kenya’s role in international peacekeeping efforts.
