In the first round of voting, a definite winner could not be decided, due to which a second round of polling was conducted, in which Muizzu was revealed to be a clear champion.

45-year-old Muizzu leads a political party that chaired a Chinese loans incursion when the party was in power the last time in the country known for its beach resorts and famous visitors.

In the second round of polling, Muizzu won 54.06 percent of the total vote, which impelled Solih to yield prior to midnight.

The result also brandishes as a turnabout for Solih, who was elected in the 2018 Maldivian Presidential election by a landslide amidst outrage over accusations of human rights violations and corruption in the tenure of his precursor.
