On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi blasted the Congress, claiming that the party was turning the nation into a jail and disobeying democratic values on the 50th anniversary of the Emergency. In another jab at the party, he said that it had no right to declare its support for the Constitution.

Congress stalwart Prime Minister Indira Gandhi declared a state of emergency on June 25, 1975, suspending civil freedoms, imprisoning opposition leaders and dissidents, and censoring the media. Up until 1977, it lasted for 21 months.

In a tweet, Prime Minister Modi honoured those who “resisted” the Emergency and said that the difficult times served as a reminder of how the Congress violated the Constitution and undermined fundamental liberties.

The PM continued by tweeting that the country should honour all of the outstanding men and women who opposed the Emergency on this day. The #DarkDaysofEmergency serves as a reminder of how the Congress Party violated fundamental liberties and the Indian Constitution, which is held in high regard by all Indians.

PM further unleashed his disagreement with the previous Congress Government by saying they turned the country into a jail system and rejected all democratic ideals in an attempt to hold onto power. Torture and harassment were inflicted on everyone who disagreed with Congress. He remarked that the weakest groups were the targets of socially regressive policies that were unleashed.

Prime Minister Modi lashed out at the Congress, saying that the party had destroyed federalism and had no right to declare their respect for the Constitution in response to claims that it was being “attacked.”

The same party that imposed the Emergency still harbours the same ideology that made it necessary. He went on, “They use their tokenism to cover up their contempt for the Constitution, but the Indian people have seen through their games and have repeatedly rejected them.”
