US Presidential Candidates Joe Biden and Donald Trump partook in the first presidential debate preceding the 2024 elections set to be conducted in November on Thursday, with both parties sending intense jabs at each other whilst in discussion of various pertinent issues. There has been a general consensus that Democratic President Joe Biden’s performance last night was shaky and hesitant, as his Republican rival Donald Trump battered him with a series of attacks that were false. The two candidates engaged in debate and exchanged blows at each other on various matters, such as abortion, immigration, the wars in Ukraine and Gaza, the economy, and even their golf games, as both aspiring presidents attempted to shift the course of long-standing opinion polls that show election results are virtually tied.
Joe Biden’s weak performance last night was rattling for his Democratic supporters, who believe that the 81-year-old president is too old to serve another four-year term. Meanwhile, Biden’s campaign attempts to put up a brave face despite the criticism, with even two White House officials saying that he has a “cold.” Vice President Kamala Harris, who appeared on CNN after the debate, claimed that he had a “slow start,” but argued that voters should judge both candidates based on their performances in their years in office. “I’m not going to spend all night with you talking about the last 90 minutes when I’ve been watching the last three-and-a-half years of performance,” she added.
Biden stumbled over his words and struggled to respond during the first half of the debate, as Trump made several statements that were simply not factual. When asked about his strategies for dealing with the national debt, Biden struggled to provide a satisfactory answer, ending his ramble with: “Look, we beat medicare.” He also fumbled on abortion rights, one of the most significant issues for Democrats, especially in this year’s election. The overturning of Roe v. Wade by a conservative Supreme Court with three justices elected by Trump went unexplained by Biden, as the landmark ruling had once legalized abortion nationwide. Biden said he “supports Roe v. Wade, which had three trimesters. The first time is between a woman and a doctor. Second time is between a doctor and an extreme situation. A third time is between the doctor, I mean, between the women and the state,” when asked about his support for restrictions on abortion. He also added that he believed doctors and not politicians should make decisions on “women’s health.”
As the debate progressed, however, Biden began to acquire more standing. Referencing Trump’s recent conviction at the hush money trials, he attacked him by calling him a “felon.” In response to the attack, Trump brought up the recent conviction of Hunter Biden, the President’s son who lied about his drug use to buy a gun. Biden also noted that almost all of Trump’s former cabinet ministers have failed to endorse his campaign, while Trump unleashed a myriad of statements based on falsehoods, such as claims that migrants have carried out a crime wave, Democrats support infanticide, and that the 2020 election results were rigged. When asked about the Jan 6 Capitol Riots, insinuated by conspiracy theories that were propagated by the former president himself, Trump refused to take any responsibility while claiming that those who were arrested were innocent.
The two men have never attempted to hide their dislike for each other, and this debate was no exception. Each called the other the worst president in history, with Biden calling Trump a “loser” and a “whiner” while Trump labeled Biden a “disaster.” Following the chaos that ensued during the 2020 presidential debate, several precautions, such as installing microphones that were muted when the candidates were not speaking, and the absence of a live audience, were taken this time around. The debate took place at a time when the polarization of the American political environment is continually escalating, with many fearing that violence could succeed the announcement of the election results. Although polls show a virtually tied race, Biden has lost his ground in most battleground states that typically decide the results. Moreover, he has trailed in terms of financial standing as funding for Trump had increased following his recent conviction in the infamous hush money trials.
Neither Joe Biden nor Donald Trump is popular among voters, and Americans remain deeply dubious of their choices.
