Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Sunday finally revealed Ukrainian soldier casualties since Russia’s full-scale invasion two years ago, giving the first official figure as 31,000.
Zelenskyy said in a news conference in Kyiv, “31,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed in this war. Not 300,000, not 150,000… Putin is lying there… But nevertheless, this is a big loss for us.” Though there was no revelation of the wounded soldiers by Zelenskyy as he said he could not disclose that number because it would help Russian military planning.
Ukraine had not put out an official figure on its military losses since the end of 2022, when presidential aide Mykhailo Podolyak said 13,000 Ukrainian soldiers had been killed since the Feb 24 invasion. Military casualties are a highly sensitive subject in a country trying to reform how it mobilizes civilians into the military to regenerate their forces after last year’s counteroffensive proved unable to break through the Russian lines.
A New York Times report in August stated that US officials had put the Ukrainian soldiers’ death toll at 70,000. The same report had also said as many as 120,000 Russian soldiers had been killed in the war, while there was no official report from Russia as it doesn’t disclose its military losses, which they consider as a secret.
Zelenskyy, on the other hand, also told reporters in the conference that 180,000 Russian soldiers had been killed in the war since its start. Both sides often describe each other’s military losses as immense.
