A tragic incident occurred on Thursday evening at a private hospital in Meerut’s Medical Police Station area near Hapur Chungi, where a pregnant woman lost her life in a lift accident. Reports indicate that the woman, along with three others, was in the elevator at Capital Hospital when its cable snapped, resulting in a fatal fall. The pregnant woman died after her neck became trapped, while three others, including a doctor, sustained minor injuries.
The accident triggered panic and outrage among the woman’s relatives, who vandalized hospital property in anger. The situation escalated, causing hospital staff to flee the premises. Police were called in to manage the chaos and restore order. The mishap occurred in the A-block of Hapur Chungi, where the lift, carrying the pregnant woman, a doctor, and other patients, initially became stuck shortly after starting. As it descended to the ground floor, the cable abruptly snapped, causing the lift to plunge. During the fall, the woman’s neck was fatally trapped.
Eyewitnesses reported that technicians were summoned to address the malfunction, but the gathering crowd near the lift only heightened the chaos. Enraged relatives damaged hospital equipment, furniture, and glass doors, prompting many patients and their families to flee. Police, led by SP City Ayush Vikram Singh, calmed the situation and confirmed that the lift’s malfunction was the cause of the accident. He assured that a detailed investigation is underway and that appropriate action will follow based on its findings.
Chief Medical Officer Ashok Kataria stated that the pregnant woman was taken to Anand Hospital, where doctors confirmed her death. Authorities have pledged a thorough inquiry into the hospital’s maintenance protocols and the lift’s safety standards to prevent such incidents in the future.
