Pope Francis Sends Warm Wishes to President-Elect Donald Trump, Calls for Unity and Justice in America
Pope Francis, in his heartfelt message before Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th president, expressed hope for a prosperous America under Trump’s leadership and stressed the need to promote a just society free from hatred and discrimination. The Pope also spoke on global challenges and called for peace and reconciliation, while also reiterating his previous concerns about Trump’s immigration policies.

Pope Francis offered his best wishes to President-elect Donald Trump on Monday, sending a message of hope and encouragement ahead of Trump’s inauguration ceremony in Washington, D.C. The pope expressed optimism about the future of the United States under Trump’s leadership, urging the nation to embrace his ideals of opportunity and inclusion while striving to build a more just society.
In his letter to Trump, the pope wrote, “On the occasion of your inauguration as the forty-seventh president of the United States of America, I offer my heartfelt congratulations and assure you of my prayers that Almighty God will grant you wisdom, strength, and protection in the discharge of your high duties.” He emphasised his hope that Americans “will always strive to build a more just society, where there is no place for hatred, discrimination, or exclusion.”
Acknowledging the myriad challenges facing humanity, including the threat of war, Pope Francis called on Trump to prioritise efforts to promote peace and reconciliation among nations. “With these sentiments, I invoke an abundance of divine blessings upon you, your family, and the dear American people,” he said.
The pope’s message comes amid his continued criticism of Trump’s immigration policies. On Jan. 19, the pope denounced Trump’s plan to deport millions of illegal immigrants during an appearance on the Italian talk show Che tempo che fa, calling such measures “outrageous.” “This is not the way to solve problems,” Pope Francis said, referring to planned immigration raids in Chicago just days before he was sworn in.
This is not the first instance of tension between the two leaders over immigration. In 2016, Pope Francis publicly criticised Trump’s proposal to build a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border, declaring such plans “not Christian.” In return, Trump labelled the pope “disrespectful” and accused him of being a “very political person.” However, relations improved when Trump visited the Vatican in 2017, later describing the meeting as “the honour of a lifetime.”
Despite their differences, Pope Francis has continued to advocate for compassion and integration in addressing immigration issues. During a recent address, he urged countries with declining birth rates to accept more immigrants, stressing the importance of integrating newcomers into society. “If the migrant is not integrated, that’s a problem,” he said.
As Trump prepares to take over the presidency, Pope Francis’ message is a call for unity and a reminder of values that transcend political divisions.
