Amid the growing discord between the Maldives and India, Parliamentary Minority leader Ali Azim is urging the removal of Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu, advocating for a vote of no confidence following the controversy triggered by derogatory remarks against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Expressing concerns about the stability of the nation’s foreign policy, Azim questions the Democrats’ commitment to preventing the isolation of neighboring countries. He directly addresses the issue, inquiring if the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) is ready to initiate the crucial vote against President Muizzu.

The diplomatic clash began when three Maldivian ministers made objectionable remarks on social media after Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Lakshadweep. The Maldives government responded by suspending deputy ministers in the youth ministry—Malsha Shareef, Mariyam Shiuna, and Abdulla Mahzoom Majid—for their derogatory comments.

As a diplomatic measure, the Maldives envoy to India was summoned to the External Affairs Ministry, where strong concerns were expressed over the offensive remarks against PM Modi. In the aftermath of the dispute, there has been a backlash in India, with celebrities encouraging people to explore domestic vacation spots instead of traveling to the Maldives. Social media is flooded with posts claiming cancellations of planned trips to the island nation.

The Maldivian foreign ministry clarified that the derogatory comments expressed by the ministers were personal views and did not represent the official stance of the government. The situation remains tense as calls for political actions against President Muizzu gain momentum in the Maldives.
