An intense situation unfolded at Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s residence in north Delhi on Monday morning. Swati Maliwal, a Rajya Sabha MP from his party, alleged in a PCR call that she had been assaulted by Kejriwal’s personal assistant, Bibhav, purportedly on the instructions of the CM. This prompted police intervention.
Maliwal then attempted to file an FIR at the Civil Lines police station but left abruptly after receiving phone calls, stating she would return. As of late Monday, her complaint remained marked as ‘pending’ with no FIR filed. Police are seeking legal counsel on proceeding based on the PCR call and entry in the DD register, a standard protocol. The incident sparked uproar on social media.
Bibhav and Swati, longstanding associates of Kejriwal since his NGO days, have reportedly had a falling out, unsettling many within AAP, especially as Kejriwal prepares for upcoming elections. AAP has yet to issue a response. Maliwal’s arrival at the CM’s residence around 9-9.10 am was allegedly met with refusal by his staff and security to meet the CM, leading to the altercation and Maliwal’s call to the police.
Delhi Police received her distress call around 9.24-25 am. The PCR log quoted her saying, ‘This is Swati Maliwal, MP, calling from 6 Flag Staff Road. Vibhav has assaulted me on the CM’s instruction.’ The SHO of Civil Lines and his team arrived at the scene, urging Maliwal to file a formal complaint at the police station.
She eventually arrived at the station around 10.30 am but left soon after, citing personal reasons. Bibhav Kumar, a former video journalist and one of Kejriwal’s trusted aides, has faced scrutiny from the ED in various cases, including money laundering and alleged irregularities in Delhi Jal Board.
Maliwal, previously listed as a star campaigner for Delhi, was omitted from the Punjab star campaigners’ list, drawing criticism from BJP. Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva remarked, ‘Instead of ordering an inquiry, she has been removed from the star campaigner list.’ Another party functionary, Tajinder Bagga, acknowledged ideological differences but praised Maliwal’s work for women, including her efforts to shut down illegal spas.
