Poland will reintroduce a 200m long buffer zone beginning next week, after a soldier was left fighting for his life. This buffer has been reintroduced as in recent weeks there has been an increase in illegal migrants who’ve been crossing the border into the EU, and the border guards have reported violent clashes along the border.

On Tuesday, a Polish soldier was left to fight for his life after he was stabbed through the fence on the border. The border has been a flashpoint between migrants and the Polish soldiers in 2021 after Belarus opened travel agencies for the migrants in the Middle East to offer them an unofficial route to Europe.

The Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated in a press conference, “It was recommended to us that we should quickly restore the 200m buffer zone in this area where possible… we are ready to make a decision by next week.” This 200m buffer was introduced by the previous government of the Nationalist Law and Justice Party during the 2021 crisis.

The Polish Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz said Poland is also ready to increase the number of troops on the border, but he did not mention any specific number. Poland plans to spend 10 billion Zlotys, i.e., $2.5 billion, on strengthening its border with Belarus.
